    Rice Says Iran Has Not Been Serious in Nuclear Talks

    July 22 - The United States and five other world powers have shown they are serious that Iranian leaders must decide whether to halt Iran’s uranium enrichment program, which could be used in manufacturing nuclear weapons, says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Full Text

     
    Presidential Candidates’ Foreign Trips Matter

    July 15 - Foreign trips by U.S. presidential candidates are more significant in 2008 than in previous American presidential campaigns, several political experts tell America.gov.

    Andrew Bennett, professor of government at Georgetown University, said the trips are particularly important in this presidential cycle because of the perceived “gap in experience” between the presumed Republican Party candidate, Arizona Senator John McCain, and his presumed Democratic opponent, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.     U.S. and Jordan Cooperate on Science and Technology

    July 9 - Delegates from Jordan and the United States opened on July 9 the first meeting of the United States-Jordan Joint Committee on Science and Technology. Experts from both countries will use the two-day conference at the Higher Council for Science and Technology in Amman to explore collaboration in water resources, environmental protection, renewable energy, public health, and agricultural development.     American Folk Music Comes to Jordan
    July 6 - As part of the Amman Summer Festival, the American folk music group “Old Grey Goose International” begins a three-day tour of Jordan on July 6th. While in Jordan, the five-member folk music group will perform traditional American songs in Amman, Madaba, Zarqa, and Baqaa.

    The band will conduct workshops and meet with local musicians, highlighting the importance of cultural exchanges between American and Jordanian musicians. “Old Grey Goose International” hails from the state of Maine, and has received rave reviews. Full Text
     

    U.S. and Jordan Strengthen Cooperation on Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights

    July 6 - In cooperation with USAID, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) of the U.S. Department of Commerce began a four-day workshop today on border enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR).  Participants include over 50 officials from the Jordan Customs Department, the Public Security Department, the National Library, the Jordan Institute for Standards and Metrology, ASEZA Customs, and other Jordanian government agencies.  The workshop, which was opened by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Daniel Rubinstein and Jordan Customs Department Director General Miteb al-Zaben, highlights the close cooperation between Jordan and the U.S. in strengthening the protection of these rights across borders.  Full Text Remarks by Chargé d’Affaires Daniel Rubinstein
     

    U.S. to Provide US$450 Additional Economic and Security Assistance to Jordan

    July 1 -  At a joint press conference today, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ms. Suhair Al-Ali and U.S. Ambassador to Jordan Mr. David Hale announced that U.S. President George W. Bush signed on June 30, 2008 legislation that includes US$450 million in supplemental economic and security-related assistance to Jordan for fiscal years 2008 and 2009.

    Jordan will receive US$200 million in economic assistance and US$50million in security-related assistance for FY 2008. The bill also includes an additional US$100 million in economic assistance and US$100 million in security-related assistance for FY 2009. This supplemental assistance is in addition to the regular economic and security-related assistance provided by the United States to Jordan for fiscal years 2008 and 2009.
