    2010 American Immigrant Visa Lottery Registration Begins

    September 29 - The U.S. Embassy announces that applications for the 2010 Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery will be accepted online beginning the evening of October 2, 2008 through December 1, 2008.  This annual program makes permanent residence visas available to persons who meet strict eligibility requirements.  Applicants are chosen by a computer-generated random lottery drawing.     Mideast Peace Process Continues to Advance, State’s Welch Says

    September 26 - Substantial progress has been made and will continue to be made in advancing the Middle East peace process, says Assistant Secretary of State David Welch.

    The United States has focused on four tracks to advance the Middle East peace process since the November 2007 Annapolis Conference: supporting the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations; building the institutions of a Palestinian state; improving the conditions on the ground; and maintaining international and regional support for the peace talks, Welch says.     U.S. Partners May Act Individually on Global Financial Woes

    September 26 - Some foreign countries will try to shore up their financial systems but are not expected to emulate the U.S. financial rescue plan and make their efforts a coordinated global action, according to experts.

    U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and the chairman of the Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, Ben Bernanke, put together the $700 billion plan, which calls for the government to buy mortgage-backed and other securities that no one else wants to buy. Full Text

    U.S. Provides Half a Billion Dollars in Grants to Jordan

    September 25 - H.E. the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali. and American Ambassador Stephen Beecroft, today signed grants from the U.S. to Jordan worth almost half a billion dollars.   The $479.4 million in regular and supplemental assistance brings total U.S. economic aid to Jordan in 2008 to $561.4 million, up about 120 percent from the previous year.

    U.S. Grant Supports Government Services Smart Card
    September 24 - American Ambassador Stephen Beecroft and H.E. Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali today signed a grant under which the U.S. Trade and Development Agency will provide $410,083 to fund strategic advisory and technical analysis related to the establishment of a national “smart card” system in Jordan.  The grant was conferred in a signing ceremony at the ministry.     The United States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Assistance

    September 23 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Al-Bashir signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide increased levels of assistance to Jordan. 

    To help meet shared goals of enhanced strategic dialogue and increased military cooperation, the MOU outlines the United States’ support for providing the Government of Jordan, over five years, $360 million per year in Economic Support Funds (ESF) and $300 million per year in Foreign Military Financing (FMF).  This commitment is subject to the appropriation and availability of funds for these purposes.
